Personal protective equipment is supposed to protect – that’s obvious. But what if the protective product itself becomes a source of discomfort or even an allergic reaction? In the case of work gloves, this is not uncommon. Itching, redness, or even a rash can indicate intolerance to a specific material or component of the glove. So how do you choose gloves that are safe for your skin, especially for workers with a tendency to allergies?
1. The most common causes of allergic reactions
Skin reactions when using work gloves may be caused by:
- natural latex – a popular material in disposable gloves and thin work gloves; in allergic individuals it may cause contact or respiratory reactions,
- powders used inside the gloves – may dry out the skin and lead to irritation,
- residues of chemicals used in the production of gloves – e.g. preservatives, dyes, hardeners,
- improper ventilation – gloves that are too tight promote sweating and skin maceration, which increases the risk of irritation.
2. What to look for when choosing gloves for sensitive skin
If you have employees with sensitive or atopic skin on their hands, it is worth choosing gloves:
- latex-free – nitrile, vinyl or neoprene gloves are a safer alternative,
- powder-free – they limit contact with skin-drying particles,
- with a natural or breathable lining – e.g. cotton, which prevents excessive sweating and chafing,
- with a dermatological or hypoallergenic certificate – this marking provides additional confirmation that the product has been tested for skin reactions.
3. Good practices in the company – how to reduce the risk of allergies in employees
- Trial tests – not every glove model will work for all employees. It is worth conducting a user test and collecting feedback.
- Access to several types of gloves – e.g. latex-nitrile alternative or with and without a lining.
- Hygiene and rotation – gloves should be replaced regularly, not only when they are damaged. Moisture and sweat promote irritation.
- Education – training employees in the use and care of gloves reduces the risk of unconscious errors (e.g. putting a glove on wet skin).
Choosing a model that is safe for your skin is not only a matter of comfort, but also has a real impact on your health and work efficiency.
